Swedish Reality Show Finds New Lady of the Lake for London Spamalot

News   Swedish Reality Show Finds New Lady of the Lake for London Spamalot
The London production of Monty Python's Spamalot will be the latest West End musical to feature the winner of a TV reality show.

Singing Swedish waitress Nina Söderquist, 35, will play the role of Lady of the Lake after winning "West End Star," the reality casting program broadcast by Sweden's TV3 channel.

During the Feb. 2 final, Söderquist — who is also a lieutenant in the Swedish Army — won 59 percent of the votes cast by the viewing public. She will make her West End debut in Spamalot on Feb. 11 when she will take over from Broadway actress Marin Mazzie, the current Lady of the Lake.

Spamalot will be Söderquist's first musical, but she has woked with many bands including Toto and The Bee Gees, and with U.S. singer Robin Beck. She also performed at the victory concert celebrating Sweden's Olympic Gold-winning hockey team; the Swedish Soccer League at the World Championships in Berlin; and has sung for American troops in Afghanistan.

Spamalot is directed by Mike Nichols (Tony-winning productions of Barefoot in the Park, Luv, The Odd Couple, Plaza Suite, The Prisoner of Second Avenue and The Real Thing) and won the Tony Award for Best Musical of 2005 plus the Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle awards in the same category.

Eric Idle based the musical's book on the 1975 film "Monty Python and the Holy Grail," the screenplay for which Idle wrote with fellow Pythons Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones and Michael Palin. The show continues to play the Shubert Theatre, where it opened on March 17, 2005. There are also productions at the Las Vegas Wynn, and an Australian version opened last November in Melbourne.

The London production is booking until Sept. 27. For more information, call (0)870 890 0142.
