Sylvia, Starring Annaleigh Ashford and Matthew Broderick, Opens on Broadway; Red Carpet Arrivals, Curtain Call and After Party!
Ashford is joined by two-time Tony winner Matthew Broderick as Sylvia's owner, who is going through a midlife crisis. Broderick's Emmy-winning wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, starred in the original Off-Broadway production of the Gurney play.
Daniel Sullivan directs the Broadway staging of the 1995 play about a married couple and their beloved dog Sylvia (who can talk to the audience, yell at a passing cat and flirt with a fellow canine named Bowser); the cast also stars Tony winner Julie White (Airline Highway) as Broderick's wife and Robert Sella (Stuff Happens, Sleepy Hollow, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) in a variety of roles, both male and female.
Sylvia, according to press notes, is about "what happens when a smart, sassy, captivating canine befriends a New Yorker in Central Park and changes his life—and his wife’s life—forever. This wonderful look into the complexities of love and commitment asks what it truly means to be devoted to your partner…and how do you choose between the love of your life and man’s best friend?" The production has scenic design by Tony Award nominee David Rockwell, costume design by Academy Award winner Ann Roth, lighting design by Tony Award nominee Japhy Weideman, sound design by Peter Fitzgerald and music by Greg Pliska with wig and makeup design by Campbell Young Associates. James Fitzsimmons is the production stage manager. Casting is by Telsey + Company/William Cantler, CSA.
The production will include Bernstein’s incidental music for Lillian Hellman’s adaptation of The Lark, and Menotti’s The Unicorn, The Gorgon, and The Manticore.
Based on the novel and film by Frank Cottrell Boyce, the new musical will reunite Guettel with Tony-winning Light in the Piazza director Bartlett Sher.
