The world premiere of The Beast in the Jungle began performances at the Vineyard Theatre Off-Broadway May 4. The original dance play is a collaboration between Tony-winning composer John Kander, Tony-nominated playwright David Thompson, and Tony-winning director and choreographer Susan Stroman. The three previously collaborated with the late Fred Ebb on The Scottsboro Boys.

The production stars Tony Yazbeck (On the Town), Irina Dvorovenko (The Americans’), Teagle F. Bougere (The Crucible), and Peter Friedman (Ragtime) as well as Maira Barriga (Miami City Ballet’s Corps De Ballet), Elizabeth Dugas (The Metropolitan Opera’s The Merry Widow), Leah Hofmann (Something Rotten!), Naomi Kakuk (The Producers), Brittany Marcin Maschmeyer (Bullets Over Broadway), and Erin Moore (Shuffle Along).

Previously scheduled to play through May 23, the extended debut engagement will now continue through June 17. The production will officially open May 23.

The award-winning design team includes scenic and costume design by Michael Curry, lighting design by Ben Stanton, sound design by Peter Hylenski, wig design by David Bova, music arrangements by Sam Davis, orchestrations by Greg Anthony Rassen, and Sam Davis, music supervision by David Loud. The production stage manager is Johnny Milani.
