The West Coast premiere of This Beautiful City, the theatrical exploration of Colorado Springs, CO — the epicenter of the American evangelical Christian movement — opens Sept. 28 after previews from Sept. 21 at the Kirk Douglas Theatre in Los Angeles.

Written by Steven Cosson and Jim Lewis, with music and lyrics by Michael Friedman, the piece was commissioned and developed by the presentational, non-traditional theatre troupe The Civilians and co-produced with New York City's Vineyard Theatre.

The Kirk Douglas is one of the venues of Center Theatre Group, which also presents work at the Ahmanson Theatre and Mark Taper Forum. Performances continue through Oct. 26.


Off-Broadway's Vineyard will present This Beautiful City in 2009. The work had earlier productions at Actors Theatre of Louisville and Washington, DC's Studio Theatre.

Directed by Cosson, the cast features Emily Ackerman, Marsha Stephanie Blake, Brad Heberlee, Brandon Miller, Stephen Plunkett and Alison Weller. This Beautiful City features set design by Neil Patel, costumes by Alix Hester, lighting by David Weiner, sound design by Ken Travis, music direction by Erik James, projection design by Jason H. Thompson and choreography by John Carrafa. Casting is by Bonnie Grisan. Production stage manager is Hannah Cohen.

"Set in Colorado Springs at the base of the majestic Pike's Peak, This Beautiful City is a new play with music that details the explosion of America's evangelical Christian movement," according to production notes. "Developed by the acclaimed theatre troupe The Civilians, This Beautiful City was created from fascinating and revealing interviews with church members, civic leaders, progressive activists and individuals from all walks of life in the Rocky Mountain town that has rapidly become the epicenter of the Evangelical movement."
