The national tour of the Tony-winning revival of The Color Purple, directed by John Doyle, will play Broadway In Chicago’s Oriental Theatre for a limited two-week engagement next summer. Performances will run July 17–29, 2018.

Casting for the tour has not been announced.

The Color Purple, named Best Revival in the 2016 Tony Awards, played its final performance January 8. Directed by Doyle and starring Cynthia Erivo, who won the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical, the revival opened December 10, 2015, and played 33 previews and 449 regular performances.

Based on Alice Walker‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same title, The Color Purple explores 40 years in the life of a family in rural Georgia. At its center is 14-year-old Celie, who is forced by her abusive father to marry a cruel farmer. Although she is separated from all that she loves, Celie ultimately conquers the odds to find her voice and her strength.

As recently announced, another musical from the 2015–2016 season will play Chicago next year: Waitress, which will run at the Cadillac Palace Theatre July 3–22.
