The play, first performed in spring 2002 at Tim Robbins’s Actors’ Gang Theater in Los Angeles, went on to New York success (608 performances) and a 27-week U.S. tour. The show, which depicts six stories of what it says were miscarriages of American justice, has also been performed at the United Nations and for various Washington dignitaries. One performance was presented to Governor George Ryan of Illinois as he was considering whether to commute the sentences of over 140 Illinois death row inmates. Star actors have been drawn to the show. In New York Jessica Blank and Erik Jensen’s play — directed by Bob Balaban — variously featured Peter Boyle, Gabriel Byrne, Richard Dreyfuss, Mia Farrow, Peter Gallagher, Jeff Goldblum, Andrew McCarthy, Alanis Morisette, Rob Morrow, Bebe Neuwirth, Amanda Plummer, Aidan Quinn, Lynn Redgrave, Kyra Sedgwick, Ally Sheedy, Brooke Shields, Kathleen Turner, Montel Williams and Debra Winger. A Court-TV version featured Brian Dennehy, Danny Glover, Delrohy Lindo, Susan Sarandon, Aidan Quinn and David Brown Jr.

In Edinburgh, a revolving celebrity cast is promised. Robert Carradine, Aidan Quinn, Rain Pyror and Dave Calvitto are among those confirmed, and press reports say that the real Sunny Jacobs — one of the people depicted in the show — played herself on opening night.
