News The Lion King to Make Southeast Asia Debut in 2011 The Tony-winning Disney musical The Lion King will make its Southeast Asia debut in March 2011 at Marina Bay Sands.

Tickets for the musical will go on sale in October, and rehearsals are scheduled to begin in January 2011.

Marina Bay Sands president and CEO Thomas Arasi stated, "We know there is tremendous excitement and anticipation in Singapore and around the region because of this award-winning Broadway musical. Our plan is to have a spectacular, world-class performance in March 2011 right here in Singapore. Featuring Disney's The Lion King is one more step towards fulfilling our dream of having the best-of-the-best in Singapore and in Asia."

Scott Zeiger, co-CEO of BASE Entertainment, added, "We have been working closely with Marina Bay Sands from day one and we can all see that Marina Bay Sands is a true architectural marvel. The engineering work at this integrated resort boasts some of the most challenging endeavours and we are certain that we will have access to the very best theatre facilities next year. The management is unwavering in its commitment to providing us with international standard stage and we simply cannot wait to see the captivating performance that will be put on for the world, right here in Singapore."

Based on the animated feature film of the same name, The Lion King, Disney notes state, "follows the adventures of the young lion cub Simba, as he struggles to accept the responsibilities of adulthood and his destined role of King." Since its Broadway opening on Nov. 13, 1997, The Lion King has been seen by 50 million people worldwide. Directed by Julie Taymor — who became the first woman to ever receive a Tony Award for Best Director of a Musical — The Lion King has become an international hit with productions playing all around the globe. The Elton John-Tim Rice musical has won over 30 major awards. Those include six Tony Awards, including one for Best Musical; eight Drama Desk Awards; six Outer Critics Circle Awards; two Sir Laurence Oliviers; the Evening Standard Award for Best Theatrical Event; and three Los Angeles Drama Critics Circle Awards.
