News The Lyons, Led By Linda Lavin and Dick Latessa, Set Up Their Den on Broadway
The Lyons, Nicky Silver's darkly comic dysfunctional-family play starring Tony Award winners Linda Lavin and Dick Latessa, begins its Broadway life April 5 at the Cort Theatre following its fall 2011 Off-Broadway premiere. It marks the Broadway debut of critically acclaimed downtown playwright Silver.

Lavin (Broadway Bound, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife) and Latessa (Hairspray, Damn Yankees) reunite with fellow members of the original Vineyard Theatre Company run, including Michael Esper (Assistance, American Idiot) and Kate Jennings Grant (Proof, 2009's Guys and Dolls) as their adult children; Brenda Pressley (original Dreamgirls) as a nurse; and Gregory Wooddell (Lincoln Center Theater's Cymbeline) as a real estate agent.

Mark Brokaw (Broadway's The Constant Wife, Cry-Baby, Reckless, After Miss Julie) again directs.

Opening night is April 23. The Broadway run is produced by Kathleen K. Johnson (Race, Hair, Blithe Spirit, Superior Donuts, A Life in the Theatre, The Best Man).

Here's how the play is billed: "The Lyons is a funny and edgy work starring Linda Lavin as Rita Lyons, the indomitable matriarch of a family at a major crossroads: her husband is dying, her son's in a dubious relationship, her daughter's struggling to stay sober and on top of it all, she can't settle on a new design for the living room."

Lavin, who got love-letter reviews for playing Rita, won the Best Actress Tony Award for her work as another frayed mother — Kate in Neil Simon's Broadway Bound. Latessa won the Best Supporting Actor for playing Wilbur in Hairspray. Their characters in The Lyons are about to begin their next chapters, while the future is uncertain for their children. The original design team for The Lyons returns: scenic design by Allen Moyer; lighting design by David Lander; costume design by Michael Krass; and original music and sound design by David Van Tieghem.

Silver is known for his caustic characters in plays about broken families and warped relationships. His plays include Pterodactyls, Raised in Captivity, The Food Chain, The Eros Trilogy, Beautiful Child, The Altruists, Fit to Be Tied, Fat Men in Skirts and The Maiden's Prayer, among others. He wrote the new book for the Broadway revival of the Rodgers and Hart musical The Boys From Syracuse.

The Lyons is the fourth production by the not-for-profit Vineyard Theatre to transfer to Broadway, following the long-running, Tony Award-winning musical Avenue Q and [title of show] and The Scottsboro Boys.

Starting with its first performance on April 5, The Lyons begins its rush ticket policy: priced at $26.50 each, a limited number of general rush seats will be sold for each performance, on the day of the show only, when the box office opens. Cash only. Limit two tickets per person.

Cort Theatre is at 138 W. 48 Street.
