CBS takes a closer look at the Tony-nominated Best Musical.

Just days away from the 71st Annual Tony Awards, CBS took a closer look at one of the Best Musical contenders: Come From Away.

The musical about the 38 planes diverted to Gander, Newfoundland, Canada on the day of the September 11 attacks, had four out-of-town tryouts before landing on Broadway in March.

The 12-person ensemble portrays the combined stories of thousands of Ganderites and plane passengers, based on the true stories gathered by Tony-nominated writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein. The cast of Come From Away actually traveled to Gander to perform a concert version of the show, and CBS reveals footage of that visit. “It was like a rock concert,” says cast member Petrina Bromley. “We were Coldplay or U2 or Beyoncé or something.”

But the show seems to have one “number 1 fan,” Captain Beverly Bass. The woman who inspires Tony nominee Jenn Colella’s main character has seen the show 68 times to date. Colella has adopted mannerisms from Bass for her portrayal, but they also carry over into her life. “Look at how we’re sitting,” Colella says in the video above, as the two sit mirror images of each other.

The cast also discussed their biggest competition, Dear Evan Hansen.

“We’ve actually discussed this,” says Joel Hatch. “We’re fine whatever happens.”
