PlayBlog The Scottsboro Boys: Maybe This Time? With several Broadway houses abruptly opening up right before the Tony cut-off, hope has been heavy that The Scottsboro Boys might scamper uptown from the Vineyard and find an available Main Stem haven.

Notes from several critics calling it the best new musical of the season would have gained it admission, and it would have given Memphis and The Addams Family — the only original Broadway scores eligible — a good race for the Tony silver.

Well, it won't happen. "The theatres that were available were just too big for the sort of show we have," said the show's director-choreographer, Susan Stroman, confirming earlier reports. "We need a smaller, more intimate house for our story, so we decided to wait awhile."

She declined to define "awhile," but other sources say it may be as soon as summer.

The last Kander and Ebb musical, all but finished by the time of Ebb's death in 2004, The Scottsboro Boys falls in behind All About Us (nee The Skin of Our Teeth) and The Visit still circling for Broadway lives.
