The revival of the Tony Award-nominated show about they heyday of the Harlem Renaissance, by Rosetta LeNoire and Loften Mitchell, is presented in an all-new staging, in conjunction with the opening of the 2004 National Black Arts Festival. Performances play the Fox Theatre.

Carroll's career has taken her from the Broadway stage and headlining in Las Vegas, to starring on television and in motion pictures. She is a Tony Award winner, an Emmy and Grammy nominee, a Golden Globe winner and a Best Actress Oscar nominee. In 1968, Carroll became the first black actress in television history to star in her own series, "Julia" for NBC.

Carroll made her Broadway stage debut starring in Harold Arlen and Truman Capote's House of Flowers. After seeing her in the show, Richard Rodgers created the Broadway production of No Strings as a starring vehicle for her; she won a Tony Award for her work. She also appeared in Broadway's Agnes of God.

In October 1995 she returned to the stage to star as Norma Desmond in the Toronto premiere (and later Vancouver run) of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard (and sang on the Canadian cast recording).

Bubbling Brown Sugar is set in the Golden Age of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, '30s, and '40s, and features the music of the era. LeNoire and Mitchell wrote Bubbling Brown Sugar "to remind a younger generation of the rich heritage left to them from those early days and the show is filled with spectacular dance numbers, beautiful costumes and scintillating settings like the Savoy Ballroom and the Cotton Club," according to Theater of the Stars production notes. "Starting out in 1970s Harlem "where break-dancers are flashing their moves, three aging entertainers meet a young couple and invite them to take a trip back in time," according to TOTS notes. "They are transported to a downtown New York speakeasy in the 1920s..."

The songs include "Stompin' at the Savoy," "Take The 'A' Train," "Swing Low Sweet Chariot," "Sweet Georgia Brown," "It Don’t Mean A Thing" "Ain't Misbehavin'" and of course "Bubbling Brown Sugar."
