Peter DuBois directs the production, to play at The Public Theater's LuEsther Hall. Previews begin Oct. 5 and the show will officially open Oct. 18 for a run through Nov. 4.
Royo (The 24 Hour Plays on Broadway) joins the ensemble which includes Gbenga Akinnagbe, Liza Colón-Zayas, Craig "muMs" Grant, Juan Carlos Hernandez, Russell G. Jones, Marisa Malone, Elizabeth Rodriguez. The actor replaces the previously-announced player Felix Solis.
"In my next play, there are four jazz musicians that play live onstage," Glaudini previously told Playbill.com. "They represent the world of the play. Also, one of the characters is a street coke dealer-wannabe rapper, and he [performs] rap music, and they play with him during that. It's kind of a jazz fusion approach to that."
The story, according to the scribe, traces the rehabilitation of an undercover cop who was shot in the head and has to learn words and memories while also following the downward spiral of the aforementioned wannabe rapper.
The play hits close to home for Glaudini who lives on the titular street. "My block is just that: undercover cops, wannabe rappers, jazz musicians, street hustlers, dice players." Michael Cain has composed original music for the production. Paul J. Thompson provides musical direction. Andrew Emer will lead a band that includes musicians Nir Felder and Q.
The design team reunites Jack Goes Boating collaborators David Korins (set), Mimi O'Donnell (costumes) and Japhy Weideman (lighting). Bart Fasbender (sound) joins the team.
The production reteams director DuBois with playwright Glaudini following the duo's Jack Goes Boating last season. DuBois also teamed with Glaudini on the previous reading of A View from 151st Street at the seventh annual free Barn Series Festival. A LAB vet, Glaudini also penned the company's Dutch Heart of Man.
The show may be inappropriate for ages 16 and under due to subject matter and strong language. The approximate running time is 110 minutes including one 15-minute intermission.
