In honor of the final week of Women’s History Month, professionals from the theatre industry will gather at downtown’s SubCulture March 27 for the New York City premiere of the short film Nevertheless, She Auditioned, followed by a panel addressing gender and racial inequality within the acting community.
The panel features Nevertheless’ writer, executive producer, and director Amanda Bruton, casting director and co-founder of She-Collective Erica Jensen, actor and creator of Rock the Audition Sheri Sanders, actor-filmmaker-casting director Elaine Del Valle, and actor-writer-producer X Mayo. Brittany Rostron, the founder and executive director of FACES, will moderate the discussion. FACES is a nonprofit that helps women break into and develop careers in the entertainment industry by providing them with the confidence and entrepreneurial skills necessary to approach their careers like small businesses.

Written and executive produced by Bruton and Steven Michael Mooney, the film was inspired by true stories from the audition room and uses comedy to push for change in the entertainment industry’s perception and treatment of women. By “looking at it through a comedic lens, we hope to highlight the absurdity and relatability of the situation,” Bruton said in a statement.
The film also featured an all-female crew. “Not only are we advocating for women on screen, we are advocating for women behind the camera,” said Mooney. “Men need to be active allies in challenging an industry that for decades has prioritized the work and voices of men over women and gender nonconforming people.”
The film premiered in 2018 at Boston’s Women in Comedy Festival, sponsored by HBO. Nevertheless won Best Ensemble at the Atlanta Comedy Film Festival and Best Editing at the Austin Comedy Film Festival.
The evening will also feature a stand-up comedy performance by Anna Suzuki (She’s Gotta Have It, High Maintenance).
