Happy Bloomsday everyone! June 16 may be the most famous date in literary history -- it's the day Leopold Bloom made his epic journey around Dublin in James Joyce's influential novel, Ulysses.

To commemorate the fictional event, every year famous performers gather at NY's Symphony Space to read 18 excerpts from the Joyce novel. Among the readers expected this year are such notables as Barbara Feldon ("Get Smart"), George S. Irving, Stephen Lang (The Speed of Darkness), David Margulies, Frank & Malachy McCourt (A Couple of Blaguards), Kier Dullea, Terry Donnelly and Frances Sternhagen (The Exact Center of the Universe).

NY radio station WNYC 820 AM, will carry the 19th annual ceremony live between 8-11 PM (the full event runs 7 PM to midnight). Isaiah Sheffer again serves as program director and host.

Broadway-philes have a special love for Bloom because Zero Mostel appeared on Broadway in the adaptation of a passage from the book, Ulysses In Nighttown, and later appeared in the Mel Brooks film, "The Producers" (soon to be a real musical!). His co-star, Gene Wilder, played a character named...Leo Bloom.

It's also been a Joycean year on Broadway, what with the musical adaptation, James Joyce's The Dead, garnering a Tony Award for Best Book.
