TheatreWorks artistic director Robert Kelley directs the work slated to open July 17 for a run through Aug. 8 at the Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto for the California company. Red follows the story of a famous Chinese-American romance writer who travels to China to investigate the story behind an abandoned Beijing Opera house for her next work.
Jue, who recently played the role of Bun Foo on Broadway in Thoroughly Modern Millie stars in the work as a revered Chinese opera diva. The actor has previously been seen on the Theatreworks' stage in Kiss of the Spider Woman, Cabaret, Pacific Overtures, M. Butterfly, Floyd Collins, As Bees In Honey Drown, Peter Pan and Amadeus.
He leads a cast that also includes Allison Sie, Grace Hsu, Rinabeth Apostol and Lawrence-Michael C. Arias. Jamie H. J. Guan choreographs.
Playwright Yew has also penned Porcelain, A Language of Their Own, As If He Hears and A Beautiful Country. The adaptor of The Courage To Stand Alone has seen his work presented by The Public Theater, Royal Court Theatre, Long Wharf Theatre, Manhattan Theatre Club and the Intiman Theater.
TheatreWorks will next present the world premiere of Andrew Lippa and Brian Crawley's new musical A Little Princess (Aug. 18-Sept. 12) as well as Living Out, Striking 12, Shakespeare in Hollywood, Vincent in Brixton and Crowns.
