News Tickets Now On Sale for 2009 Season of Stratford Festival, Featuring McAnuff, West Side Story Ticket sales for the 2009 season of Canada's Stratford Shakespeare Festival start Jan. 10, with an early-order discount available until Jan. 31.

Sales to members began in December 2008. The Jan. 10 box office date is for the general public. All ticket prices are reduced by up to 15 percent until Jan. 31.

This marks the first season under the sole artistic directorship of Tony Award-winning Canadian-born director Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys, The Who's Tommy, Broadway's imminent Guys and Dolls). The 2008 season began with a trio of artistic directors.

Macbeth (directed by McAnuff) and Cyrano de Bergerac, both with Colm Feore in the title role, are attracting great interest in early sales, according to the Festival.

Members were also enthusiastic about the two musicals, West Side Story (directed by Gary Griffin) and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (directed by McAnuff), as well as the Oscar Wilde comedy The Importance of Being Earnest, directed by and featuring Brian Bedford as Lady Bracknell.

Tickets are also selling quickly for Bedford's one-man show, Ever Yours, Oscar, which tells the story of Oscar Wilde through his letters. Only a limited number of tickets are still available. The season at the internationally renowned festival in Ontario also includes:



  • A rare production of Ben Jonson's Bartholomew Fair, directed by Antoni Cimolino, the Festival's general director, and featuring the members of the Birmingham Conservatory and senior members of the company. Barenaked Ladies' Steven Page returns to the Festival to compose the music for the satire of big-city life. Page worked with Cimolino on the 2005 production of As You Like It.  



  • Julius Caesar, with a stellar cast led by Geraint Wyn Davies in the title role, Ben Carlson as Brutus, Jonathan Goad as Mark Antony and Tom Rooney as Cassius.  



  • Three Sisters featuring the powerhouse Adrienne Gould, Lucy Peacock and Irene Poole.  



  • Phèdre with Seana McKenna in the title role and featuring Roberta Maxwell as Oenone.  



  • A Midsummer Night's Dream, directed by David Grindley, featuring Dion Johnstone as Oberon, Geraint Wyn Davies as Bottom and Yanna McIntosh (who is also playing Lady Macbeth) as Titania.  



  • The all-Canadian season at the Studio Theatre: Rice Boy by Sunil Kuruvilla, Zastrozzi by George F. Walker and the world premiere of The Trespassers by Morris Panych. Stratford productions are presented on four stages, in repertory between April and November.
