Performances of the new drama with humor by the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Dinner With Friends, began Jan. 5 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre in a production by Manhattan Theatre Club. The play was commission by Geffen Playhouse in Los Angeles, where the world premiere (with three different cast members) played. The Broadway production by MTC is produced by special arrangement with Nelle Nugent/Wendy Federman.
The Broadway production also stars Eric Bogosian (the actor and playwright known for Talk Radio and "Law & Order: CI") and Alicia Silverstone ("Clueless," "Miss Match," Broadway's The Graduate). She is the one holdover from the Geffen run of 2009.
This is the fourth collaboration for Pulitzer Prize winner Margulies (Dinner With Friends, Brooklyn Boy) and Sullivan. The play is set in the Williamsburg, Brooklyn loft apartment of James and Sarah.
According to MTC, "Sarah and James, a photographer and a journalist (Laura Linney and Brian d'Arcy James), have been together for nine years and share a passion for documenting the realities of war. But when injuries force them to return home to New York, the adventurous couple confronts the prospect of a more conventional life."
In Time Stands Still, Bogosian (making his Broadway acting debut) plays Richard, the photo editor of photographer Sarah, played by Emmy and Golden Globe Award winner Linney ("John Adams," "The Squid and the Whale," Broadway's Sight Unseen). Silverstone plays Richard's young girlfriend, Mandy. D'Arcy James starred in Broadway's Shrek and The Sweet Smell of Success, among other works.
The creative team for Time Stands Still includes John Lee Beatty (scenic design), Rita Ryack (costume design), Peter Kaczorowski (lighting design), Darron L. West (sound design), Peter Golub (original music) and Thomas Schall (fight direction). The production stage manager is Robert Bennett. The stage manager is Shanna Spinello.
Tony Carlin and Monica McCarthy are also part of the company.
