"It's all looking really good," Adam Shankman said of Cruise's potential casting in the film. Shankman, who also directed and choreographed the film adaptation of Hairspray, will direct Rock of Ages' big screen premiere.

It has not been revealed which role Cruise has been offered, but Shankman hinted that his "Tropic Thunder" appearance interested the director. "I was really inspired and impressed by him as Les Grossman and his willingness to go for it," he said.

For the record, Les Grossman is a rather rotund and hairy studio executive with a foul mouth in the film. This could indicate that Cruise might be up for the role of Dennis, the owner of The Bourbon Room, where Rock of Ages takes place.

As previously reported, the musical's book writer Chris D'Arienzo has penned the screenplay for the film that will be produced by the Rock of Ages Broadway producers Carl Levin, Matthew Weaver and Scott Prisand, with Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Gibgot. Executive producers are Janet Billig and Hillary Weaver, who are also producers of the Broadway production.

Rock of Ages, which uses hits from the 1980s as its score, originally premiered Off-Broadway at New World Stages in October of 2008. The musical transferred to the Brooks Atkinson Theatre on Broadway in March of 2009, earning five Tony nominations including Best Musical, Best Direction, and Best Actor for Constantine Maroulis.
