News Tony and Oscar Winner Mercedes Ruehl to Star in McCarter Theatre's The How and the Why Academy, Tony and Obie Award winner Mercedes Ruehl will star in the McCarter Theatre's world premiere of Sarah Treem's The How and The Why.

Directed by artistic director Emily Mann, the cast will also feature New Jersey native Bess Rous. Previews will begin Jan. 7, 2011, with an official opening scheduled for Jan. 14. Performances will continue through Feb. 13.

"Evolution and emotion collide in Sarah Treem’s thought-provoking and sharp new play about science, family, and survival of the fittest," according to press notes. "On the eve of a prestigious conference, an up-and-coming evolutionary biologist wrestles for the truth with an established leader in the field. This intimate and keenly perceptive play explores the difficult choices women of every generation face."

The How and The Why is a recipient of an Edgerton Foundation New American Plays Award.

Show times will be Tuesday-Thursday at 7:30 PM, Friday and Saturday at 8 PM, with matinees Saturday at 3 PM and Sunday at 2 PM.
