Michael Greif, who staged the world premiere of the play at the Guthrie Theater in 2009, also directed the Off-Broadway bow of the four-hour work (presented with two intermissions), which began previews March 23 in the Newman Theater. The Public and the Signature Theatre co-present the New York bow, which officially opened May 5.

The cast includes Michael Cristofer, Linda Emond, Michael Esper, Steven Spinella, Steven Pasquale, K. Todd Freeman, Hettienne Park, Molly Price, Matt Servitto, Danielle Skraastad and Brenda Wehle.

Cristofer, Emond, Esper and Spinella originated their roles in the Guthrie world premiere in 2009.

Here's how The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide is billed: "In the summer of 2007, Gus Marcantonio, a retired longshoreman and cousin of the late New York Congressman Vito Marcantonio, summons his three adult children to the family’s Brooklyn brownstone - to vote on the question of his committing suicide. The Intelligent Homosexual's Guide… explores revolution, radicalism, marriage, sex, prostitution, politics, real estate, unions of all kinds and debts both unpaid and unpayable."

The production has scenic design by Mark Wendland, costume design by Clint Ramos, lighting design by Kevin Adams, sound design by Ken Travis, music by Michael Friedman and fight direction by Rick Sordelet. A Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner for Angels in America, Kushner also penned Short Talks on the Universe, A Bright Room Called Day, Slavs!, Hydriotaphia, Homebody/Kabul and the book to the Tony-nominated musical Caroline, or Change. The Signature Theatre Company recently presented repertory productions of Angels in America Off-Broadway. His adaptations include Corneille's The Illusion, S.Y. Ansky's The Dybbuk, Brecht's The Good Person of Sezuan and Mother Courage.
