News Tony Snafu?: Urban Cowboy Score May Be Eligible for Nomination Although Playbill On-Line was informed April 24 that the Tony Award Administration Committee had ruled that the score for Urban Cowboy would be ineligible for a Best Score nomination — because it features many songs not specifically written for the theatre — this ruling appears to be in question.

Pete Sanders, the press representative for Urban Cowboy, said that the Tony committee "never discussed the Urban Cowboy score yesterday." Leonard Soloway, an Urban Cowboy producer who sits on the Administration Committee, informed Sanders of this news today. Adds Sanders, "There was no special petition made because there are enough new numbers in the show to qualify for a Best Score nomination." It should be noted that several past musicals — including State Fair and Footloose — whose scores were not entirely written for the theatre have been nominated for Best Score.

A spokesperson for the Tony Awards was unavailable for comment as of press time Friday evening. The Tony Awards Administration Committee will meet again May 8.
