Variety reports that the Tony Award-winning actor will star in Kenneth Lonergan's The Starry Messenger, which is aiming for a Broadway bow at a theatre to be announced in April 2007. Producers of the new play, which will be directed by its playwright, include Roger Berlind, Carole Shorenstein Hays, Kim Parker, Daryl Roth and Scott Rudin.

No other casting has been announced.

Broderick previously appeared in another Lonergan work, the 2000 film of "You Can Count on Me," which co-starred Laura Linney and Mark Ruffalo. Lonergan's other plays include This Is Our Youth and Lobby Hero. The playwright's newest film, "Margaret," is scheduled for a fall release.

Matthew Broderick received Tony Awards for his performances in Brighton Beach Memoirs and the revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying. He was also Tony-nominated for his work in The Producers, and his other theatre credits include Biloxi Blues, Night Must Fall, Taller Than a Dwarf, On Valentine's Day, Torch Song Trilogy and The Widow Claire.
