The Women's Project teams up with Off-Broadway's Playwrights Horizons to premiere the latest by playwright Marlane Meyer, The Chemistry of Change. The production is helmed by Lisa Peterson (Collected Stories at MTC, and SLAVS!) and takes place at N.Y.'s Theatre Four, Feb. 10 March 7, 1999 with an official opening Feb. 21.
In Chemistry, matriarch of the family Lee (played by Best Little Whorehouse in Texas Tony winner Carlin Glynn), finds a new way to provide for her children: marrying rich men, then living off the divorce settlements. On her way to marrying husband number 10, she falls in love for the first time.
Other plays by Meyer include: Etta Jenks, Kingfish, The Geometry of Luck, and Moe's Lucky Seven. Her work has been produced by the Public, London's Royal Court, Steppenwolf, and South Coast Rep.
Starring alongside Glynn are Christopher Innvar (Floyd Collins, Les Miserables), Hamish Linklater (Love's Fire), Larry Pine (Angels in America, Bus Stop, MTC's Mizlansky-Zilinksy), Barry Del Sherman (Moe's Lucky Seven), Jodi Thelen (Brighton Beach Memoirs) and Brenda Wehle.
Designing the show are Chris Barreca (set), Kevin Adams (lighting), Katherine Roth (costumes) and Laura Grace Brown (sound).
Women's Project & Productions was founded by Julia Miles in 1978 to give women a greater voice in American Theatre and has since produced more than 100 mainstage shows. Playwrights Horizons, a "writer's theatre," presents new works by contemporary American playwrights, composers and lyricists. Tim Sanford is the current artistic director.
