The Hollywood Reporter states that Paul W.S Anderson will direct the film based on Roger Corman's 1975 original, which starred David Carradine and Sylvester Stallone. "Death Race" tells of a futuristic American prison in which the inmates are forced to race against one another in an enclosed arena. Allen is signed to play the warden of the prison, with Statham playing Frankenstein, the crowd favorite, who is forced into the race by Allen's character.
Joan Allen won a Tony for her role in Lanford Wilson's Burn This. She was Tony-nominated for The Heidi Chronicles and has been nominated for three Academy Awards for "The Contender," "The Crucible" and "Nixon." Allen currently stars in "The Bourne Ultimatum," which is now in theatres.
Filming for "Death Race" is scheduled to begin shortly, with an intended 2008 release.
