Tony and Emmy Award-winning actress Leslie Uggams will star in the title role of Jerry Herman's Hello, Dolly! for Houston's Theatre Under The Stars beginning Feb. 26, 2008.

Based on Thornton Wilder's The Matchmaker, Hello, Dolly! features a Tony Award-winning book by Michael Stewart and music and lyrics by Tony winner Jerry Herman.

The TUTS production will be directed by Roy Hamlin and will feature choreography by Randy Slovacek, a former cast member of the 1995 Broadway revival of Hello, Dolly! starring Carol Channing. Further casting for the TUTS staging will be announced shortly.

Uggams will return to Houston, having previously starred in the TUTS productions of Into the Woods and Anything Goes. The actress most recently starred opposite James Earl Jones in the Broadway revival of On Golden Pond. A Tony winner for her Broadway debut in Hallelujah, Baby!, Uggams has appeared in Thoroughly Modern Millie, King Hedley II, Anything Goes, Jerry's Girls, Blues in the Night and Her First Roman on Broadway. She earned an Emmy for her work on television's "Fantasy" and appeared as Kizzy Reynolds in the award-winning miniseries "Roots."

Hello, Dolly! earned ten Tony Awards for its 1964 Broadway debut starring Carol Channing. The original production, directed and choreographed by Gower Champion, would run 2,844 performances with headliners including Pearl Bailey, Phyllis Diller, Ethel Merman, Betty Grable, Martha Raye and Ginger Rogers. Songs from the production include "Before the Parade Passes By," "Put On Your Sunday Clothes", "Ribbons Down My Back," "Dancing," "It Only Takes a Moment" and the title song.
