Tony Award winner John Rubinstein, who originated the title role in the premiere production of Stephen Schwartz's Pippin, will play Caldwell B. Cladwell in the Interact Theatre Company's upcoming production of Urinetown.

Calvin Remsberg will direct the production of the award-winning musical at Los Angeles' Matrix Theatre. "Days of Our Lives" star Matthew Ashford will also be featured in the cast as Senator Fipp; the remainder of the company comprises Annie Abbott, Doug Ballard, Rona Benson, James Calvert, Amanda Carlin, Emily Janice Card, James Cooper, Robert Briscoe Evans, Marc Fellner, James Greene, Steven Hack, John Hemphill, Liz Herron, Rob Kahn, Jean Kauffman, Jason Lewis, Kelly Lohman, Sharon Madden, Tracy Powell, Melanie Rockwell and Vanessa Whitney.

Urinetown, which features music and lyrics by Mark Hollman and book and lyrics by Greg Kotis, will begin performances at the Matrix Sept. 16 and run through Oct. 22. Show times are Thursday-Saturday evenings at 8 PM and Sundays at 3 PM.

The creative team for the production also includes Tracy Powell (choreography), Carol Doehring (lighting design), Dan Belzer (conductor) and co-star Rubinstein (musical direction).

"A depletion of the earth's water supply has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets," reads Urinetown press notes. "The privilege to pee is regulated by a single, malevolent corporation, which profits by charging admission for one of mankind's most basic needs." The musical won 2002 Tony Awards for Best Score, Best Book of a Musical and Best Direction of a Musical.

John Rubinstein made his Broadway debut in Pippin and received a Tony Award for his work in Children of a Lesser God. His other Main Stem credits include Fools, The Caine Mutiny Court-Martial, Hurlyburly, M. Butterfly, Love Letters, Getting Away with Murder and Ragtime.
