Classic Arts News Toronto's Canadian Opera Company Reports Strong Attendance for The Handmaid's Tale Attendance for the Canadian Opera Company's presentation of Poul Ruders' The Handmaid's Tale last month was 97 percent of capacity, the company announced.
The 2000 opera, based on the Margaret Atwood novel, was making its Canadian premiere. According to the COC, operagoers under 30 bought nearly 40 percent of single tickets for the run.

"We launched our season with the company's first 21st-century opera and met with fantastic success," said general director Richard Bradshaw in a statement.

Subscription sales have risen by 6.3 percent over the previous season, the COC said. The company's other fall production, Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor, also had 97 percent attendance.

The COC season continues in January with Robert McQueen's production of La bohme.
