News Tribute to Mirvish in Toronto Will Include All-Day Performances on a Street He Knew Well A public celebration of the life of Honest Ed Mirvish — the famous Canadian retailer, theatre owner and producer — will be held Aug. 12 in Toronto.

Mirvish died July 11. Son and theatre producer David Mirvish is inviting the public to a free eight-hour-long celebration that will take place outside Honest Ed's Retail Emporium at 581 Bloor Street West. The City of Toronto will close off Bloor Street between Bathurst and Markham Streets to accommodate the large turnout that is anticipated. Ceremonies will begin at 11:30 AM in the presence of premier of Ontario, The Hon. Dalton McGinty and Mayor David Miller, who will proclaim Aug. 12, 2007, "Ed Mirvish Day" in the City of Toronto.

Guest speakers include Toronto Police Chief Bill Blair, Honorable Lincoln Alexander, former boxing champion George Chuvalo, actress Shirley Douglas, Michael "Pinball" Clemons and others.

Following the introductory ceremonies, there will be seven hours of live entertainment "and surprises." Refreshments will be served.

Confirmed performers include Michael Burgess, Molly Johnston, Hawaiian Pacific Magic, Andrea Garafolo, We Will Rock You cast members, Randolf Dance Academy, Toronto All-Star Band with Rick Sonata, Bernie J, The Church of God Gospel Choir, Flamenco Dancers, Shades of Blue and others. Expect over 100 performers, 20 acts in all.

An honor guard represented by Toronto Police Services, Emergency Medical Services, Toronto Transit Commission and Toronto Fire Department will be on hand for the ceremonies.

Ed Mirvish is the only Canadian in history for whom the theatres on Broadway in New York City dimmed their lights on the day of his funeral.
