Composer Tom Kitt, designer Dale Ferguson, lighting designer Kevin Adams, librettist-lyricist Lee Hall and director Matthew Warchus all received two 2009 Tony nominations each.

Both Warchus and Adams will compete against themselves. British director Warchus was nominated for Best Direction of a Play for his work on both God of Carnage and The Norman Conquests. His competitors in that field include Phyllida Lloyd (Mary Stuart) and Bartlett Sher (Joe Turner's Come and Gone).

Adams received two nominations in the Best Lighting Design of a Musical category: for his designs for Hair and Next to Normal. His fellow nominees include Howell Binkley (West Side Story) and Rick Fisher (Billy Elliot).

Next to Normal composer Tom Kitt earned a Best Score nomination (with lyricist Brian Yorkey) for that new rock musical and a joint Tony nomination for Best Orchestrations with Michael Starobin, also for Next to Normal. Kitt's writing partner, Yorkey, also nabbed two Tony nominations: Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score (with Kitt).

Dale Ferguson received nominations for Best Costume Design of a Play and Best Scenic Design of a Play, both for the revival of Exit the King. Pulitzer Prize winner David Lindsay-Abaire's first foray into the world of musical theatre was also recognized. The librettist-lyricist received nominations for Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score (with composer Jeanine Tesori).

It was also a good morning for another librettist-lyricist, Lee Hall, who received nominations for both Best Book of a Musical and Best Original Score (with composer Elton John) for Billy Elliot, The Musical, which earned 15 Tony nominations in all, the most of any show of the season.

The 2009 Tony Awards will be held at Radio City Music Hall June 7. CBS-TV will broadcast the event live.
