PlayBlog Tyne Daly, John McDaniel and Jerry Mitchell Will Re-Light Ballroom Tyne Daly and her musical director, John McDaniel, who will be concluding their much-raved-about gig at Feinstein's at Loews Regency on Jan. 30, met about this time of year 18 years ago doing Queen of the Stardust Ballroom at the Long Beach Civic Auditorium — and darned if they aren't on the brink of doing it again.

When Daly finishes her upcoming Kennedy Center stint, playing Maria Callas in Terrence McNally's Tony-winning Master Class (March 25-April 18), she and "McD" plan to do a workshop of the Stardust show for director-choreographer Jerry Mitchell, who believes he can blend the ballroom scenes with the book scenes better than Michael Bennett did in the 1978 show that he redubbed, simply, Ballroom.

The Long Beach revival, done five years after Bennett's death, reverted to the teleplay's original title, leading man (Charles Durning) and Emmy-winning choreographer (Marge Champion). A new book by Susan Dworkin replaced the ones that Jerome Kass wrote for television and Broadway. Glenn Casale directed it.

No word yet which book (if either) will be used, but the call has gone out for new songs. It's not known if the original composer, Billy Goldenberg, will participate in this, but The Bergmans, Alan and Marilyn, have their pencils poised for new lyrics.
