News Van Hove's Staging of The Misanthrope Opens Off-Broadway Sept. 24 The Misanthrope, directed by Ivo van Hove, officially opens at Off-Broadway's New York Theatre Workshop Sept. 24.

Previews for the production, which will play through Nov. 11, began Sept. 14. Tony Harrison penned this version of the Molière drama.

Van Hove, who directed NYTW's 2004 production of Hedda Gabler, brings the classic to NYTW "with a fresh, modern perspective – viewing Molière's text through the lens of our society in which the traditional social fabric has frayed and virtual relationships can be deleted with the simple push of a button," according to show notes.

The cast features Quincy Tyler Bernstine (as Eliante), Jason C. Brown (Clitandre), Bill Camp (Alceste), Amelia Campbell (Arsinoe), Joan MacIntosh (Acaste), Alfredo Narciso (Oronte), Thomas Jay Ryan (Philinte) and Jeanine Serralles (Celimene).

The design team includes Jan Versweyveld (production), Emilio Sosa (costume), Raul Vincent Enriquez (sound) and Tal Yarden (video). Dramaturgy is by Bart Van den Eynde. The production stage manager is Larry K. Ash.

The NYTW season began with Rinde Eckert's Horizon and Betty Shamieh's The Black Eyed. Forthcoming productions includes JoAnne Akalaitis directing Mikhail Baryshnikov in Beckett Shorts, Naomi Wallace's Things of Dry Hours and the Elevator Repair Service's staging of The Sound and the Fury. Tickets for The Misanthrope at NYTW, 79 East 4th Street (between Second Ave. and Bowery), are available by calling (212) 239-6200. For more information visit the website at www.nytw.org.
