One of the great American theatre spaces, Circus Maximus Showroom, the venue within the Caesars Palace complex in Las Vegas, will have its final show Sept. 3, according to Reuters.

In addition to some of the world's best-known performers, including a young Woody Allen, Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., George Burns, Judy Garland, Jack Benny and Milton Berle, the room housed various plays and musicals over the years, including Sweet Charity and The Odd Couple.

Steve Lawrence and Eydie Gorme will perform the theatre's last show, Sept. 3. The space opened with Andy Williams Aug. 5, 1966.

The 980-seat theatre was named after Rome's chariot racetrack. The showroom will be razed so that exclusive "villa suites" can be created for big spenders, Reuters reported.

Circus Maximus was considered the No. 2 space in town 34 years ago, second only to the Copa Room at the Sands, where Sinatra performed. Sinatra moved to Caesars in 1968 after Howard Hughes bought the Sands. -- By Kenneth Jones
