News Victory Gardens Keeps Trying; Joanna Glass With Fritz Weaver Extends Two Weeks Victory Gardens Theater in Chicago will extend Trying, its current world premiere play by Joanna McClelland Glass, starring Tony Award-winning actor Fritz Weaver and Chicago's Kati Brazda, by adding two weeks of performances, through May 15.

Trying is directed by Sandy Shinner and "depicts the final year in the life of Francis Biddle, attorney general under President Franklin D. Roosevelt," as seen through the eyes of his assistant. The story is inspired by playwright Glass' own experience as Biddle's personal secretary from 1967-68. The production earned solid notices for script and performances. It was to have closed May 2.

"Trying begins when Biddle, a 'Philadelphia Biddle,' hires Sarah (Kati Brazda), a direct, plain-spoken newlywed from the Canadian prairie, to be his personal secretary. Ill and irascible, the 81-year-old Biddle functions, as he says, 'somewhere between lucidity and senility,' and announces he has but one year left to live. Sarah is sensitive and vulnerable, but determined to last out that year. Together they 'try' to communicate across significant barriers of age and class."

Tickets are $30-$35.Victory Gardens is located at 2257 N. Lincoln Ave., in Chicago's Lincoln Park neighborhood. For tickets, call (773) 871-3000 or visit http://www.victorygardens.org.
