Classic Arts News Vienna Philharmonic Auctions Tickets for New Year's Concert The Vienna Philharmonic is auctioning a pair of tickets to its legendary New Year's Day concert on the web site eBay, with the proceeds to go to the Health Academy of the World Health Organisation (WHO) of the United Nations.
The concert, held annually at the Musikverein, features Strauss waltzes and other light favorites, and is broadcast around the world to an audience numbering in the millions. Tickets for the event ordinarily cost 160-550 euros, but are available only by means of a lottery conducted nearly a year in advance.

New York Philharmonic music director Lorin Maazel, who led the concerts annually from 1981-1986 and has returned several times since, will conduct this year's concert.

The auction started on October 22 and ends on November 1. As of the evening of October 25, eBay had logged 73 bids and the price had reached 3,333 euros.
