Classic Arts News Vienna Philharmonic's 2007 New Year's Concert Makes Billboard Classical Chart
The 2007 version of the Vienna Philharmonic's traditional New Year's Day concert arrived on Billboard's classical chart last week, making its debut at no. 7. The performance of waltzes, polkas and other festive music, conducted this year by Zubin Mehta, was recorded by Deutsche Grammophon, reproduced on CD, packaged and distributed in record time, according to the label.
Also making its chart debut last week, at no. 21, was a digitally remastered three-disc set from RCA Red Seal titled Arturo Toscanini: The Complete Philadelphia Orchestra Recordings 1941-42.

Re-entering the chart at no. 24 was the Harmonia Mundi recording of Da Pacem and other works of Arvo P‹rt performed by the Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir.

For the 14th straight week, Songs From the Labyrinth, Sting's recording of John Dowland lute songs, holds the chart's top spot. The late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson's recording of her husband's Neruda Songs with the Boston Symphony under James Levine remains at no. 2. Joshua Bell's Voice of the Violin is in third place, followed by popular violinist Andr_ Rieu's The Homecoming!, Mychael Danna's score for the film The Nativity Story, and pianist Gabriela Montero's Bach and Beyond.

There was one new arrival on Billboard's classical crossover chart, at no. 25: Uninhibited: The String Quartet to Hinder, a collection of covers, played by strings, of tunes by the eponymous rock band.

The quasi-operatic boy band Il Divo's Siempre has moved from second to first place on the crossover chart, displacing Josh Groban's Awake, which is now at no. 2. Andrea Bocelli has titles at no. 3 and no. 6; Il Divo has additional recordings at nos. 4 and 5.

There is one other notable development: for the first time in many a week, neither The Three Irish Tenors, The Celtic Tenors, The Ten Tenors, nor any other group with "Tenors" in its name has a disc on the classical crossover chart.
