Think of the Vineyard's free performances of Kirsten Childs' Rumpelstiltskin and Mark Setlock in Fully Committed as the Off-Broadway company's idea of looking forward and back.

Childs, who is developing her new musical The Miracle Brothers with the Vineyard, will see her retelling of the Rumplestiltskin fairy tale played June 25 at the Madison Square Park. Setlock, who obtained quite a bit of fame as the fifteen or so characters in Committed, returns to the role July 9 for one performance only, also at Madison Square Park.

Based on the classic Grimm fairy tale about an evil creature who forces a young woman to spin straw into gold until she can guess his name and free herself, Rumpelstiltskin features a book, music and lyrics by Childs. Darius de Haas played the title character in recent readings, which also starred La Chanze, Steven Pasquale and John Jellison.

Starting out as Sam, the stressed out-of-work actor-cum-reservations clerk at the city's hottest four-star restaurant, Setlock portrays not only the eatery's staff but a series of outrageous guests clamoring for a table in Fully Committed. These patrons run the gamut from killer Mafiosi and rich old ladies to supermodels and Wall Street tycoons.

The roles were originally written for Setlock by playwright Becky Mode who created the part at the Vineyard and traveled with it to Boston and Los Angeles. Tony winner Roger Bart, Christopher Fitzgerald, Brian Beacock and Bronson Pinchot were among the actors to have a go at Fully Committed after Setlock. Both Rumpelstiltskin and Fully Committed begin at 6:30 PM. Madison Square Park is located on Fifth Avenue and Madison between 23rd and 26th Streets.
