With music by Noel Gay and a book and lyrics by Douglas Furber and L. Arthur Rose, the musical originally opened in 1937 in London's West End. In 1985 the musical returned to the West End in a new staging with book revisions by Stephen Fry and Mike Ockrent. This revised London production opened on Broadway Aug. 10, 1986, at the newly built and modern Marquis Theatre. It was the second production to play the Marquis following Shirley Bassey's July 1986 concert engagement. Directed by Mike Ockrent, the cast starred Robert Lindsay as Bill Snibson, Maryann Plunkett as Sally Smith, George S. Irving as Sir John Tremayne and Jane Summerhays as Lady Jaqueline Carstone. In his review for the New York Times, Frank Rich commented on the "sheer happiness" of the show and claimed it "uncorked the innocence of the old-fashioned musical comedy so ingenuously that for once a theatergoer is actually sucked directly into that sunny past rather than merely suckered into nostalgia for it."

Me and My Girl was nominated for 13 Tony Awards and took home three, including awards for leads Lindsay and Plunkett. The musical went on to play 1,420 performances before closing Dec. 31, 1989. Notable replacements during its run included Jim Dale, Ellen Foley and Dee Hoty.
