Classic Arts News Vocalist Keely Smith Opens New York's Highlights in Jazz Series The 2005-06 Highlights in Jazz series at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center in Manhattan opens tonight with a performance by vocalist Keely Smith.
Keely and her husband, trumpeter and bandleader Louis Prima, formed one of the biggest lounge acts of the 1950s. Tonight, she performs with trumpeter Earl Gardner, saxophonist Jerry Vivino, bassist Chip Jackson, drummer Joe Cocuzzo, and keyboardist Ken Ascher; Dennis Michaels is the musical director for the evening.

Highlights in Jazz's fall season continues on November 10 with a program titled "Back by Popular Request" featuring vocalist Freddy Cole, clarinetist Ken Peplowski, guitarist Marty Grosz, and Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks.

On December 1, the series pays tribute to clarinetist Kenny Davern with performances by Davern's quartet and the Statesmen of Jazz, a group featuring trombonist Wycliffe Gordon and saxophonist Houston Person.

The winter schedule includes "An Evening of Jazz Guitar" on January 5, 2006, with Bucky Pizzarelli, Russell Malone, Howard Alden, Gene Bertoncini, and Frank Vignola. Wycliffe Gordon and bassist and singer Jay Leonhart make guest appearances.
