News Walmartopia, a Futuristic "Norma Rae," Begins Fringe Run Aug. 16 Walmartopia The Musical!, which played a record-breaking run in Madison, WI, in 2005, begins its New York International Fringe Festival engagement Aug. 16.

Directed by Catherine Capellaro, Walmartopia will play the Henry Street Harry DuJur Playhouse through Aug. 22. Described as a musical send-up of "big business and eternal smiley faces," the work was penned by director Capellaro (libretto) and Andrew Rohn (score).

The 17-member cast comprises Tara Ayres as Michelle/Audience Member, Chris Babiarz as Dr. Normal/SecurityMart, Mikhael Farah as Zeb/Bob, Frank Furillo as Scott Lee, John Gustafson as Pearson/Alan/Phil, Joe Hammes as Darin/Ted, Doug Holtz as Husband/Sam Walton/Lieutenant, Jake Jacobson as Customer#1/Otis/Eugene, Kelly Kiorpes as Urban Grrl/Rachel/Throttled Guppie, Kelly Kriesel as PR Rep/Hooters Gal/Captain, Anna Marquardt as Vickie Latrell, Kelly Murphy as Mia/Lab Rat/Stage Manager/Audience Member, Jennifer Pluff as PR Rep/Counselor James, Stefanie Resnick as Urban Grrl Leader/Lab Rat/Audience Member, Marcy Weiland as Annie/Commander, Sarah Whelan as Wife/Mary/Lenore and Kristy Wilson as Cust#2/Urban Grrl/Daphne.

Walmartopia, according to press notes, tells the "hilarious and timely tale of Vicki Latrell, a single mom who speaks out against her company's working conditions and finds herself jettisoned to 2036, into a future where Wal-Mart dominates the entire world."

The creative team also includes Shannon Barry (choreography), Kelly Murphy (costume design), Paul Schaefer (lighting design), Ehren Tresner (sound design) and Kim Zunker (properties design).

Walmartopia The Musical! will offer performances Aug. 16 at 9 PM, Aug. 17 at 4 PM, Aug. 18 at 7 PM, Aug. 20 at 12:45 PM and Aug. 22 at 9:30 PM. The Henry Street Harry DuJur Playhouse is located at 466 Grand Street. Tickets, priced at $15, are available by visiting www.fringenyc.org.
