News West End Production of Million Dollar Quartet to Shutter in January

The West End production of Million Dollar Quartet is to shutter at the Noel Coward Theatre Jan. 14, 2012, after a run of less than a year.

The show began performances Feb. 8 2011, before an official opening Feb. 28. The original London cast featured Ben Goddard (Jerry Lee Lewis), Derek Hagen (Johnny Cash), Francesca Jackson (Dyanne), Robert Britton Lyons (Carl Perkins), Michael Malarkey (Elvis Presley) and Bill Ward (Sam Phillips).

In a press statement, the producers of Million Dollar Quartet commented, "We’ve enjoyed a fantastic year in the West End and audiences have been amazing. The musical has been seen by over 200,000 people, played over 250 performances and grossed in excess of £5 million at the Box Office. We’d like to thank our cast of extraordinarily talented actors and musicians as well as the great company and crew who have all helped raise the roof of the Noël Coward Theatre night after night."

Million Dollar Quartet is inspired by the actual meeting of rock and roll giants that took place on Dec. 4, 1956, at Sun Records in Memphis. It was masterminded by Sun Records founder Sam Phillips, who discovered all four of the musicians, and brought Elvis Presley (and his then girlfriend) back to the recording studio that launched him to stardom. Together with Sun Records' fast-rising new superstar Johnny Cash, and Carl Perkins, who was still chasing his next big hit after writing and recording "Blue Suede Shoes," the fourth member of this impromptu "quartet" was Phillips' latest signing, Jerry Lee Lewis.

The musical is directed by Eric Schaeffer with a book by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux; it was originally directed and conceived by Floyd Mutrux. The creative team also includes Derek McLane (scenic design), Jane Greenwood (costume design), Howell Binkley (lighting design), Kai Harada (sound design) and Chuck Mead (musical arrangements and supervision).
