Produced by Cross and Marianne Quinn, West End Story: An Anatomy of the Musical Theatre traces the British musical and its mark on the Broadway stage. The film documents the challenges of starting a career in the musical theatre and the “demands necessary to remain there.” Among the theatre personalities interviewed in the documentary are Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber, Petula Clark, Luci Arnaz, Jerry Herman, Frances Ruffelle, Simon Bowman, Jerome Pradon, Brent Barrett, Kim Criswell, Ria Jones and Robert Cuccioli. The film also features scenes from such musicals as Cats, Les Misérables, The Phantom of the Opera, Miss Saigon, The Witches of Eastwick, Whistle Down the Wind and The Beautiful Game. West End Story won the New York International Film Festival for Best Music Documentary. Cross has also written the feature film “Ice Pawn” and such mini-series as “Studs Lonigan” and “Amazons.” As an actor, he portrayed Walter Richards on the prime-time serial “Rituals” and was seen in Spoon River, the Musical in Los Angeles.
Presented by PM Films and Lynmar Productions, West End Story will be screened in New York on April 7 at Village East Cinema (screen 7), 181 Second Avenue at 12th Street. The screening, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 4 PM.
