Funny Girl, the 1964 musical musicalized bio of Fanny Brice, gets a revival toplining Rachel Cohen at Westchester Broadway Theatre, July 9-Sept. 26 in the New York City suburb of Elmsford, N.Y.

Cohen gets to sing such show stoppers as "People" and "Don't Rain On My Parade."

For those unfamiliar with Funny Girl, the show that made Barbra Streisand a legend (I Can Get It For You Wholesale simply made her a star), it's about the life of vaudeville superstar Brice, who rose in show business through sheer moxie -- and sensational talent. Fanny falls in love with suave gambler, Nick Arnstein. The role was originated by Sydney Chaplin (Charlie's son) but is also associated with Omar Sharif, who played Arnstein opposite Streisand in William Wyler's 1968 film.

Isobel Lennart wrote the original book, while Merrill wrote lyrics and Jule Styne composed the music. The original production of Funny Girl ran more than three years at the Winter Garden Theatre.

Tom Polum directs this Girl, which features sets by Gregory Hill, costumes by Heidi Giarlo, lighting by Andrew Gmoser and wigs by George Fraggos. Following Funny at WBT will be My Fair Lady (Oct. 1-Jan. 30, 1999), The Nunsense Christmas Musical - Nuncrackers (Dec. 8-27), and Oklahoma! (Feb. 4-Apr. 3, 1999).

Funny Girl has encountered some bad news over the past two years, from a Deborah Gibson tour that closed on the road to the suicide of its lyricist, Bob Merrill; but perhaps fortune will smile again on this production.
