Westport Adds Dinner with Friends to 2010 Season

News   Westport Adds Dinner with Friends to 2010 Season
Donald Margulies' Pulitzer Prize-winning play Dinner with Friends will complete the 2010 season at the Westport Country Playhouse.

Westport associate artistic director David Kennedy will stage the play that is scheduled to run June 1-19. The production will fill the second slot in the season schedule, which begins with She Loves Me in April.

Casting will be announced at a later date.

"I love this play. It's funny, moving, touching, and deeply felt. A finely wrought exploration of the way we think about each other,” said Westport artistic director Mark Lamos in a statement. “It's about the way we think we know our closest friends, our spouses and, more importantly, ourselves. And how wrong we can be. Like the plays of Ibsen, it uncovers an unspoken truth inside the psyches of a group of people living supposedly fulfilled, happy lives. It's a play about perception, and it's a play about love, and it's a play about time ... and the changes time wrings on relationships. How we love each other differently than we used to."

Dinner with Friends, according to Westport, "is about Gabe & Karen and Tom & Beth, two couples who have been close friends for years, and who participate in all the familiar and comfortable rituals of shared vacations, good conversation and great food. When Tom abruptly walks out on Beth, it threatens more than just their marriage alone. This vibrant and edgy contemporary play explores the difficulties of one couple surviving the other pair’s divorce."

Margulies' Time Stands Still is currently running on Broadway and his drama Collected Stories will begin a Broadway revival later this season. His plays include Shipwrecked! An Entertainment — The Amazing Adventures of Louis de Rougemont (As Told by Himself), Brooklyn Boy, Sight Unseen, Two Days, God of Vengeance, The Model Apartment, The Loman Family Picnic, Found a Peanut, Luna Park and What’s Wrong with This Picture? The complete Westport season follows: She Loves Me (April 20-May 8); Dinner with Friends (June 1-19); Happy Days (July 6-24); I Do! I Do! (Aug. 10-28); and The Diary of Anne Frank (Sept. 28-Oct. 16).
