Summer may be a slow season on Broadway, but theatre talent abounds at these Manhattan cabaret and music venues. From three-time Tony nominee Tovah Feldshuh to American Songbook extraordinaire Michael Feinsten to up-and-coming composers you need on your radar, here are the highlights to keep your calendar full:

Tovah Feldshuh: Aging Is Optional
August 1 & 3 at Feinstein’s/54 Below
The star of Broadway’s Yentl and Golda’s Balcony—with more recent appearances on television’s The Walking Dead and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend—plays a return engagement.

Encores! Off-Center
August 2–5 at City Center
The Off-Center series ends its 2017 season with the 1980 Maurice Sendak–Carole King musical hit, directed by Leigh Silverman (Violet) with musical direction by Carmel Dean and starring Taylor Caldwell.

New Writers at 54!
August 2–15 at Feinstein’s/54 Below
This series introducing up-and-coming songwriters features Eli Bolin (Aug. 2), Timothy Huang (Aug. 8), Sam Willmott (Aug. 10), Eric Price (Aug. 13), Kailey Marshall (Aug. 14), and Sukari Jones & Troy Anthony (Aug. 15).

Michael Feinstein: Showstoppers
August 8–12 & Aug. 23–Sept. 3 at Feinstein’s/54 Below
The renowned pianist-singer-musicologist-American Songbook ambassador returns to his home base with an evening of show tunes by Rodgers, Porter, Sondheim, Hamlisch, and more. For the final two weeks he is joined by a special guest, each bearing a Tony Award: John Lloyd Young (Aug. 23–27) and the legendary Betty Buckley (Aug. 29–Sept. 3).

August 8–12 at Birdland
The John Pizzarelli Trio returns for their annual summer stint at Birdland. As before, they do two performances a night—so theatregoers looking for a musical treat have time to make the 11 p.m. set.

Cristin Milioti
August 17–19 at Joe’s Pub
The star of Once and David Bowie’s Lazarus—and a recent guest at Lincoln Center’s American Songbook—returns to Astor Place for a three-night stint.

The musical director and orchestrator of such shows as the John Doyle Company, the Sutton Foster Sweet Charity, and the upcoming Mean Girls takes the stage at 54 Below with assorted singing friends.

August 21 at Subculture
The three-time Tony-winning composer-lyricist and orchestrator Jason Robert Brown presents the next concert in his ongoing residency at the downtown venue. This time, he welcomes special guests Tony winner Lena Hall and Broadway bass player and musical director Charlie Rosen.
