The star of Broadway’s The Boys in the Band also shares about how he almost wound up naked onstage—and the song he’s planning to sing for post-opening night karaoke.

Matt Bomer makes his Broadway debut with the 50th anniversary revival of Mart Crowley’s The Boys in the Band, now in previews at the Booth Theatre before an official opening May 31.

As the actor told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, he feels like this play is one of importance. “It’s about a group of gay men pre-Stonewall who gather in an apartment, because it’s illegal for them to celebrate together in public to celebrate their friend’s birthday,” he said. “Slowly over the course of the evening—as more alcohol is imbibed—things start to go off the rails and it takes a sharp, dark turn.”

Still, that doesn’t stop some unexpected comedy from bubbling up. “I did make a rookie mistake on our third preview. I forgot to set my props before the play. My character takes a shower within the first five minutes,” Bomer said. “I realized that there was no towel when I got out of the shower. I had the choice to do the rest of the scene buck naked, which would not have made any sense, or there’s like a glass partition, so I had to coyly reach around and grab my tighty whities and put them on my soaking wet body and do the rest of this scene in wet tighty whities.”

Bomer says he’s having the best time onstage, but he’s also preparing for the post-opening celebration where the guys say they’re planning on karaoke—but the actor didn’t know what up-beat song to sing. Thanks to Questlove, he found it!

Though The Boys in the Band is technically a part of the 2018–2019 season, Bomer will be in attendance at this year’s Tony Awards June 10, and he’s bringing his 13-year-old son as his date. “This is his first one and he said to me, ‘Listen, I know there are gonna be a lot of people there, but I just want you to know, I don’t crack under pressure.’”
