Michael Donald Edwards, Asolo Repertory Theatre's producing artistic director, announced the company's 2010-11 season on March 8.
Bonnie & Clyde will open at Asolo's Mertz Theatre Nov. 19. A talent search for new stars is expected to be part of the process. Details will be announced.
This is the first mention of the show being "Broadway-bound."
The musical about the Depression-era American outlaws has music by Frank Wildhorn (Jekyll & Hyde, The Scarlet Pimpernel), lyrics by Tony Award winner Don Black (Sunset Boulevard, Song and Dance), book by Ivan Menchell (The Cemetery Club, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) and direction and musical staging by Jeff Calhoun (Deaf West's Big River, Broadway's Grease!).
The "seductive and cinematic new musical has a thrilling new score that combines rockabilly, blues and gospel music," according to Asolo. Casting and additional details for this production, "including a major talent-search contest slated for April," will be announced. Stark Sands and Laura Osnes starred in the California world premiere.
The Asolo will also stage a world-premiere play to be announced, plus productions of David Hirson's La Bête; Reginald Rose's Twelve Angry Men; Boeing-Boeing by Marc Camoletti, translated by Beverley Cross; Ira Levin's Deathtrap; Lynn Nottage's Las Meninas; and Hershey Felder's George Gershwin Alone.
Additionally, Asolo Rep's New Stages project, launched in 2008-09 with The Giver, will return with Antigone Now by Melissa Cooper.
In 2011, Asolo Rep will bring back "Asolo Rep Unplugged: theatre in the raw," a play festival launched during the 2009-2010 season. The second festival's group of new plays selected for development will be announced in early 2011.
The goal for the 2009-10 "Unplugged" play festival is to eventually fully produce one of the readings in the following season (in 2010-11). The selection from Unplugged 2010 that will be fully produced in the 2011 season has not yet been made. (It will play April 15-May 14, 2011.)
Titles and dates for productions of the Florida State University/Asolo Conservatory's 2010-11 season were also announced. The slate includes Two Gentlemen of Verona by William Shakespeare, directed by Greg Leaming; Neil LaBute's Reasons to be Pretty, directed by Barbara Redmond; Henrik Ibsen's The Lady From the Sea, directed by Andrei Malaev-Babel; and Tartuffe by Moliere, directed by guest artist Wes Granthom.
