Shining, beaming, gleaming, flaxen, waxen.

Any new production of Hair had better be worthy of the above adjectives (well, except "waxen"), so International Management Group is carefully weighing what rock stars will be approached to star in a new remounting of what remains the single most influential rock musical in history.

A New York magazine "Intelligencer" item (Nov. 15) notes that Alanis Morisette and Lenny Kravitz have shown interest in the project, but IMG isn't commenting on its casting offers and considerations. They did say it's considering major rock stars and is thinking about a national tour and Madison Square Garden as the New York venue. Messages left for IMG by PBOL were not yet returned at press time.

Hair, with music by Galt MacDermot and book/lyrics by James Rado and Gerome [sic] Ragni, first opened in October 1967 at the New York Shakespeare Festival. The show transferred to the Cheetah discotheque space but failed there. The next year, however, director Tom O'Horgan gave the show a make-over, and Hair ended up running 1,742 performances at the Biltmore Theatre. A 1977 revival of the show, again directed by O'Horgan and again at the Biltmore, ran only 43 performances. Milos Forman resuscitated the material via his 1979 film; however, only regional and off-off-Broadway stagings have followed since.

The musical, a cause celebre at the time for its brief nudity and non-narrative, hippie-like atmosphere, is now best remembered for its score, including such pop classics as "Easy to be Hard," "Good Morning Starshine," "Aquarius," "Let the Sunshine In" and "Where Do I Go?" -- By David Lefkowitz
