Produced by Scott Bernstein — under the SMB Films banner — the currently untitled project would concentrate on Franklin's rise to superstardom in the 60s and 70s. It will also focus on her marriage to her abusive former spouse, Ted White.

In an earlier interview with Rolling Stone, the music icon said she believed six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald would be an ideal candidate to portray her on film.

Franklin, the winner of 18 Grammy Awards, has sold more than 75 million records. Hudson won her Oscar for her performance as Effie in the film version of "Dreamgirls."
