"This is her favorite season, without question," Murphy said. "I really want her to keep her hand in. Does that mean 13 episodes? Does that mean six? Does that mean one?"

In "AHS: Freak Show," Lange stars as Elsa Mars, a woman who operates one of the last remaning freak shows in the country in the 1950s.

"It always starts with a character for Jessica," Murphy continued, "so I think I'd have to present her with something she was very interested in. Before, I was met with a really quick 'No.' Now, I'm hearing, 'Well, let's keep talking.' So I thought that was a very good sign. I think if I presented her with the right character, and it could work with her schedule, she might be interested. That's my hope."

"Freak Show" also features Kathy Bates, Sarah PaulsonFrances Conroy, Evan Peters, Denis O'Hare, Gabourey Sidibe, Emma Roberts, Finn Wittrock, Michael Chiklis, John Carroll Lynch, Wes Bentley and Patti LaBelle.

According to FX, "'American Horror Story: Freak Show' begins its tale in the quiet, sleepy hamlet of Jupiter, Florida. The year is 1952. A troupe of curiosities has just arrived to town, coinciding with the strange emergence of a dark entity that savagely threatens the lives of townsfolk and freaks alike. This is the story of the performers and their desperate journey of survival amidst the dying world of the American carny experience."
