A spokesman for the not-for-profit confirmed Farrow was in talks to reprise the part she created in the 2003 world premiere New Haven production. Lapine has spoken publicly about Farrow's casting in the title role.

Lapine will direct his script, about an incapacitated woman, surrounded by family.

The production begins Sept. 2 on the PH Mainstage on West 42nd Street. Farrow's last starring role in a major New York production was in Bernard Slade's Romantic Comedy, on Broadway in 1979. She appeared recently in Off-Broadway's The Exonerated.

According to PH's 2005-06 season announcement: "Fran's fighting for her life. Incapacitated, her fate in the hands of caretakers both calculating and sympathetic, Fran guides us into the past, casting a bemused eye over the events that brought her to this place, this bed. Surrounded by family members torn between keeping her alive and letting her slip peacefully away, Fran's journey is that of a vital, deeply conflicted soul, stranded in an unearthly limbo."

Lapine is the Pulitzer Prize winning librettist, director and playwright known for Sunday in the Park With George, Into the Woods, Falsettos, Twelve Dreams, Passion and his direction of The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Dirty Blonde, The Diary of Anne Frank, Amour and more. Fran's Bed played in 2003 at The Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, CT, and originally starred Farrow ("Rosemary's Baby," "Hannah and Her Sisters") and Harris Yulin (Hedda Gabler, The Diary of Anne Frank), with Marcia DeBonis ("Tadpole," "L.I.E."), Christopher Innvar (Victor/Victoria, Floyd Collins), Kellie Overbey (QED, Betty's Summer Vacation), Brenda Pressley (Dreamgirls) and Carrie Preston (Indiscretions, Chaucer in Rome).
